I've been waiting to see protests such as the one pictured. Duality is one way to see and understand the world. In the most basic terms, duality is that there is either a right or a wrong. We're inundated in our culture to feed in this way of seeing the world. Parents pass on the cliche that as a parent their responsibility is to teach children to learn right from wrong.
A dualistic mindset is responsible for ideas such as; if you're not for us, you're against us, there is a right religion and all others are wrong, the divisive nature of our politics.
The protest picture is an exaggeration of the fact that people defend duality without even understanding it. The avatars have warned of the damaging effects of duality through the ages, but the message hasn't been heard on a grand enough scale to have a deep effect in our culture.
Jesus told us to "judge not lest ye be judged". The major pitfall of duality is that puts a person directly in alignment with needing to be a judger. If I'm constantly in search of what's right, I must have to fight what is wrong.
Out beyond the ideas of right and wrong, there is a field, I will meet you there. ~Rumi This is the most elequant way it has been put that when outside of a dualistic mindset, love can truly exist.
Confused by thoughts,
we experience duality in life.
Unencumbered by ideas,
the enlightened see the one Reality.â€
~Hui – Neng (Buddhism)
I do not preach that duality is wrong, that would spin me in irony of using duality to answer the question. Duality is one way of seeking truth in the world. The majority of arrested development I find from seekers is trying to find the mindset outside of duality, using a dualistic filter. Even the most profound teachings I've experienced have students in these disciplines blaming and bashing other institutions as being incorrect. The teachings were to remove the dualistic filter.
Duality breaks down in the search for truth. People are beginning to wake up to the fact that there is no one way to find truth. It is a confusing new paradigm to shift into, because our culture stymies us with a veil of only a dualistic mindset.
How to practice in non-duality. Be for something. Don't go to anti-war demonstrations, go to peace rallys. You find if there is consideration for conscious attention around this idea, the articulations of a new reality of why this is so powerful.
Between the opposites, lies the path.
